August 5, 2024: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced in a written reply to a Rajya Sabha question that the revised completion date for the 1,380-km Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project is now October 2025. The project has reached 82% physical progress, with 1,136 km already constructed. The ministry has undertaken the construction of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, including spurs, in 53 packages covering a total length of 1,386 km. As of June 2024, 26 packages have been completed.
This expressway will connect major economic hubs in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the expressway will reduce the distance from Delhi to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) by about 180 km and cut travel time to connected destinations by up to 50%.
On February 20, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 86-km Vadodara-Bharuch section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. This greenfield expressway, costing Rs 98,000 crore, will traverse five states and is being constructed in four sections with a total of 52 construction packages.
How will the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project benefit the region?
The upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Delhi, Mumbai, and other key cities. This development is poised to transform the real estate landscape along the corridor, spurring the emergence of townships, business parks, and logistics parks, and creating new investment opportunities. Property prices have already seen a notable increase due to the project. This infrastructure initiative is crucial for the region's economic growth, generating new jobs and attracting home seekers, thus boosting the demand for residential properties. Several prominent developers have also launched new residential projects along the expressway, further contributing to the region's development.
