On March 8, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government will decrease the prices of LPG cylinders by Rs 100 in celebration of International Women’s Day.
According to the Prime Minister, who shared the news on the micro-blogging site X, this decision will alleviate the financial strain on numerous households nationwide, particularly benefiting women.
In a tweet, Modi stated, “On Women’s Day today, our government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by Rs 100. This move will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, particularly benefiting our Nari Shakti.”
He further emphasized, “By enhancing the affordability of cooking gas, we also aim to promote the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This aligns with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them.”

The Prime Minister's announcement follows the Union Cabinet's approval on March 7 for the continuation of a targeted subsidy of Rs 300 per 14.2-kg cylinder (and proportionately pro-rated for 5-kg cylinder) for up to 12 refills per year. This subsidy is to be provided to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) during the financial year 2024-25 (FY25). As of March 1, 2024, there are over 10.27 crore PMUY beneficiaries.
