On June 11, 2024, it was announced that the Union Cabinet approved the construction of three crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This decision was made during the first meeting chaired by Prime Minister Modi on June 10, 2024.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), launched in 2015-16, provides assistance to eligible rural and urban households for constructing houses with basic amenities. Over the past decade, more than 4.21 crore houses have been completed under the scheme. Each PMAY house is equipped with essential facilities such as household toilets, LPG connections, electricity, and functional tap water connections, coordinated with other state and central government initiatives.
In her interim Budget speech for 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that despite Covid-related challenges, the government is close to completing the construction of three crore PMAY houses. The government has set a target to construct an additional two crore PMAY-G houses over the next five years to meet the housing needs of India's growing families. Additionally, Rs 80,671 crore has been allocated for the PMAY scheme.

Ans 1. Objective/purpose of the Scheme PMAYG is a housing scheme for construction of dwelling unitsin the rural part of the Country by providing the financial assistance of Rs. 1.2 Lakh/1.3 lakh to the eligible beneficiaries in plain/Hilly areas.
Ans 2. Under this mission, families will get a central assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh to enhance their existing houses or construct new houses. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the houses will be constructed with eco-friendly technology and preference will be given to old and disabled while allotting ground floors.
Ans 3. Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U)(74), a flagship Mission of Government of India being implemented by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), was launched on 25th June 2015.
Ans 4. The PMAY-G scheme has now been extended upto 2024. 2. Monetary assistance of upto Rs 1.3 Lakhs: Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana (PMAYG) or pm awas yojana 2024 offers assistance of Rs 1.2 Lakhs for building houses in the plain areas and Rs 1.3 Lakhs in hilly areas, North-East states, and certain other areas.
Ans 5. Difference between PMAY-G and PMAY-U EWS applicants are eligible for houses with a carpet area of 322 square feet. For lower income groups, the designated carpet area is 645 square feet. Houses in rural areas will be spread across a carpet area of at least 269 square feet.
