Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 2, 2024, said a total of 11.8 crore farmers in India receive government subsidy under the government’s flagship PM Kisan Yojana every year. These include the small and marginal farmers of the country, the finance minister said while presenting the Interim Budget 2024-25.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 24, 2019, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is one of the world’s largest direct benefits transfer schemes. Under the scheme, an annual amount of Rs 6,000 is disbursed in the bank accounts of eligible farmers in three equal installments. So far, 15 installments of the scheme have been distributed by the government.
In the 15th instalment, over 8crore farmers received more than Rs 18,000 crore released by the prime minister on November 15, 2023. With that, the total amount transferred to the beneficiaries since the inception of the scheme has crossed over Rs 2.80 lakh crore.
